Default Sydney Bike Show MTNX/4X

If you are in or close to Sydney on Friday 21 October, this is definitely worth a look, or even better, a race if you are keen.

Construction is underway for a world class mountain biking facility close to the city. Sydney Olympic Park is the venue for the new Mountain Cross (MTNX) course, the most expensive of its type ever to be built in Australia.

The course is also the most geographically central mountain bike facility in Australia, with Sydney’s population of 4,000,000 people located within an hour of the site. This brings good news for mountain bikers, who would otherwise have to travel for upwards of an hour to reach other comparable riding destinations. Once finished, the course will be a facility accessible to all riders.

The course will be completed in time for the opening round of the National Series. The Bicycling Australia Mountain Cross event will be held on Friday 21 October, drawing many of Australia’s top mountain bike riders returning from a season spent racing in Europe and the US. Nathan Rennie, former world champion and world cup winning downhill rider, will lead the line up of riders.

However, the racing is not just for the professional riders, with the event open to all riders from juniors and sport class to elite men’s and women’s categories.

MTNX is the newest branch of the sport of mountain biking. A cross between downhill racing and BMX, MTNX is fast, furious and extremely competitive.

Four riders go head to head in a sudden death, action packed race complete with jumps, spills and plenty of air. Sydney Olympic Park’s new course will be approximately 250 metres in length, with races lasting for about 25 seconds of intense pedalling.

“This is a step forward in launching Mountain Cross as a fully-fledged part of mountain biking,” said race director Robbie McNaughton. “As race director, I am excited that Mountain Cross is moving up to the next level.

“It’s great to be part of bringing Mountain Cross so close to a large amount of people, especially right in the heart of Sydney.”

MTNX offers a unique opportunity for spectators to see all the action up close. A relatively short course means that vantage points along the side of the course offer great viewing perspectives.

Spectator entry is free.

This exciting MTNX event precedes a weekend of cycling at Sydney Olympic Park, with the inaugural Festival of Cycling taking place on Saturday 22 and Sunday 23 October. The Bicycling Australia Show, held at The Dome, is a bike-lover’s expo, with new technology, rider demonstrations, seminars, cycling holidays and more on display over the weekend.

The Portfolio Partners Sydney Spring Cycle, held on Sunday 23 October, is a fun ride for all the family which begins in North Sydney and finishes 50 km later on Olympic Boulevard. Free entertainment, cycling activities, giveaways, live music, delicious food and drinks at the Boulevard market, as well as bike safaris and a taste of other exciting cycling activities, will be on offer at The Overflow, Sydney Olympic Park between 11am and 3pm.
