Default Hardrock, 4300 or 4500 Trek

Looking for some advise on which is the best bike for my needs. I'm looking for something that I can ride around town and be rough on the bike on the trail. List some pros and cons between the bikes so I can make an educated decision. All opinions are welcome, also if you know of a better bike that might fit my needs better throw it out there.

My buddy just bought a 4500 and he loves it. He is a big dude about 6'8" and he rides pretty hard. Our trail riding is not very hard on a bike in our neck of the woods. I have an 03' 4100 and I have beat the hell out of the bike and aside from a broken spoke here and there the frame is solid.
