This news sucks. He is such a great rider. I was very disappointed when he crashed in last year's Vuelta...

It seems Valverde was hit on the knee days ago and the pain has been growing day by day since the TTT. The pain is at the rotulian tendon in the left knee. It hurts him when riding at high speed 50+ km/h especially in the long descents, however it seems he can climb OK. Let's wait and see. I cross my fingers.
However the team directors have said that if the pain continues it would be better to leave the race, and not to risk for a greater injury. |

What bad luck. I watched stage 11 and he was up and down to the TDF medical car several times : I saw the doctor giving him a tablet after he examined his knee. Valverde just pushed on the pedals and cruised back to the peloton and I thought nothing more of it. It would be a pity if he dropped out - he's a great talent and I'd love to see how he would do in the end. |

Yeah, I'll be disappointed to see him go because I still wondered whether he might end up with the white jersey in Paris.

Well the latest news I have is that he has started the stage and is on the bike riding with the peloton. However, Unzue has said that if Valverde feels pain today during the stage he will abandon the race.

Betfair (online gambling) were showing his odds dropping and they quoted the report on the link supplied above to lengthen his odds. I hope you're right though - and that he is still racing. |

I agree. I hope he will be ok but it's not looking good. I expect(and hope)we'll see a lot from in the next few years. |

Spaniard Alejandro Valverde -- wearing the white jersey of the race's best young rider (25-and-under) -- hurting near the back of the pack... The Illes Balears rider is suffering from tendonitis in a knee after a bang on his handlebars and could be a race-quitting risk today...

Sad to see he's had to retire. I look forward to seeing him soon in a future race.

Its not Official, he dropped out in the feedzone. What a big blow ot the team, not only he could have competed for a possible podium placement, but he could also be there to help support Mancebo to the podium spot also. Wish best of luck and hope he is fine for the World Champs.
