Default AC air: upgrade or replace?

My dilemma is this: I have a Giant AC air with over a thousand fairly hard miles on it and I am wondering if I should replace or upgrade it. I'm not sure what year it is, but is has a Psylo fork, SID shok and an exquisitely ugly gold and black paint job.

I weigh 185lbs and use the bike for xc and light fr riding. The bike works fine and I like it lot so I'm leaning towards overhauling/upgrading it, but don’t want to invest money if there is a clearly superior ride available. My budget to upgrade is $500-800, for a new bike I could go $1500-2000 (plus whatever I could get if I sold the giant). Any advice would be appreciated.

Looking at the Giant web site and considering the color, it appears to be a 2001 model. It is a tough call. If you can get $500 for the old bike on ebay (just guessing there), you are into the $2000 to $2500 range which can buy a nice bike. However, I bet if you looked closely at what you have, you could overhaul it and have a nice bike for a lot less.

What do you think you need to upgrade/replace on the old bike??

Thanks for the reply. I was thinking a newer fork with a little more travel might be nice. I just didn't want to invest money in the bike if there was a newer generation of suspension design that offered a dramatic improvment. For example, I've been hearing about the new VPP designs and would be willing to spend the extra dough if, for example, there was a bike out there with 8" of rear travel that pedals as well as the Giant. Right now I'm leaning heavily towards keeping the old bike...any thoughts on a good fork for it?
