I have just bought new rims to accomodate disc brakes. I want new disc brakes. I do most of the maintence work on my bike. I have never put them on before. Does anyone have some good points for me???????
I am going to buy the Avid mechical disc brakes, what do you think about them??? I have found them for about $200 for both.... Is that a good price????

James,
I did the same thing on my Trek Fuel. Went from XTR V-brakes to Avid mechanicals. Definitely much stronger. I found that the easiest way to line up the Avid brakes was to loosely attach them to the bike but have the brake cable tightened enough to pull the brake pads in to touch the rotor. Once they are clamping on the rotors, then I tightened the brake mount bolts. That should provide you enough clearance and center the pads at the same time. Be prepared that over time, the rear brake will squeal when it is used over an extended period of time during cold weather when the pads and rotor wear in. It has happened to me and a couple of other people that I know. |

Avid mechanical brakes are great! I've had them for the past 6 months and I love them, really powerful and no more scaping noises in mud and wearing out rims every year. They are also much easier to set up than hydraulics and you dont have the oozing gunge to deal with, although hydraulics are probably even more effortless. Here's the page with the installation pdf files for download. http://www.sram.com/en/avid/discbra...allbearing7.php |

Avids are the only choice for Mech. Brakes. I run some and I also run Hydros; there isnt much difference [altho a bit
]Bare in mind that only 1 piston is active, making it a little different to line up than most hydro disks, BUT, that being said; they rock! |

I do have a small problem with my mechanicals.
I dont seem to be able to get the inside of the brake adjuster to screw far enough in. Basically I cant seem to get the inside pad quite far enough away from the disc. Its fine, but I'd like another millimetre. Any ideas? |
