Default Armstrong announcement hints at premature retirement

What do you guys think of this?

Quote:

Six time Tour de France winner Lance Armstrong is set to make an "important announcement" just before this year's Tour de Georgia on April 18. In an interview with French paper Le Figaro, published on Wednesday, Armstrong hinted at a possible early retirement, although he does have a two year contract with Discovery Channel.

"I won't be doing the Tour forever," he was quoted as saying. "But it's still to early to talk about it. I will announce it to you, to the world, only later...To win a seventh Tour is now my objective. But seven would be just one more whereas six was magic."

I think he may retire directly after this years tour. I am compelled to believe that his sponsor has too much investment involved to let him go before the big show.

I would tend to agree but if this were the case; why wouldn't he wait until after the TdF to make his announcement? Strange.

No, LA not retire before this year's Tour. He has committed to riding one more tour, in his contract with Discovery Channel. He will announce that, regardless of whether he wins this year's Tour or not (which he will ride), he is not going for next year's Tour or any subsequent Tours.

He wants to announce before the Tour 2005 because (i) if he ends up losing the Tour (unlikely), nobody will say he retired because he was afraid of retrying to win in 2006, and (ii) if he wins the Tour, people will not expect him to try for eight.

He will not retire. He will try for things like the hour record.

Yes, the options are after TdF or later, not before it..

Excellent post. Another idea floated elsewhere is that since his Tour motivation seems a bit lacking (compared to previous years according to his comment) maybe he is going to try the Giro/Tour double. Interesting idea. My thought is that maybe Discovery is going to launch a sports channell with some ccycling shows.

and since he has just gone to the magistrate in Italy and told him the 'truth' (as he sees it) about the Simeoni incident - the one thing that, according to his great friend Verbruggen, was stopping him riding the Giro - then what's to stop him going for a surprise double? Maybe that's what he'll announce before TdG.

Since we have all agreed in this forum that the overwhelming evidence points that Lance is a drugfree professional cyclist, I believe the anouncement will concern the attempt on the Hour or the Giro ....... And since the news has broken that he has met with Italian officials , he is probably going to attempt a TDF/Giro double ......
My beliefs are based on this ......... Lance runs on motivation ..... Lance has won "MORE" TDF's then any other rider.... The TDF is a extremely difficult thing ,and Lance needs to reach new "Lance-like Goals." The man already has beaten death , been WORLD CHAMP, won 6 TDF's, lives in Texas, and has a super hot rock star babe....... What more is there???? Maybe Lance thinks it would be cool to take a bike ride around Italy soon with a few of his mates, enjoying great food and wine , and having Discovery pick up the tab ......

The last man to win the TDF, not named Lance, was Marco Pantani. Remember him? He died at age 34, on Valentine Day 2003. He was a drug addict.

No way the TDF was going to allow a top ten GC contender---or a defending Champion from ever testing positive for illegal drugs. That would take us back to 1998 joke of a race.

Since 1999, LA has had to dodge many doping bullets---and it has cost him losts of energy.

From his National Junior teammates suing USA Cycling---and LA wanting to keep out-of-it legally, to the TUE for corticosteroids at the 1999 prologue, to the suspicious insulin & Actovegin discovered in 2000 to the numerous lawsuits with former employees, well known authors and fellow racers to spats with Greg Lemond, the world is indeed shinking.

In August 2004---after LA's last victory, the UCI finally signed off on the WADA Code of Ethics and their banned substances list.

If the TDF of 2005 permits WADA and local police to be active and free, then LA will not race the Tour. LA cannot compete without lots of privacy.

This decision (and negotiated guarantees) will not be made until the very last minute.

Team Discovery will need an 'A' and a 'B' GC rider in case LA gets ill or decides not to participate.

I doubt that LA will announce his retirement in 2005 at Georgia. But again, his retirement decsion will be based more upon legal discovery and compliance than anything else.

Getting out when the gettins good is always tough.

He may do 8 just to piss you off!

I think it's quite possible that LA will announce this is his last TdF. I would be shocked if he didn't compete this year as he probably has some significant commitments to Discovery to do so.

I would also be quite suprised if he announced he is going for a Giro/ TdF double as his recent comments lead you to believe he is tired of being away from his family so much. Trying for a double would only make this worse.

Of course he may decide that he is riding the Giro instead of the TdF.

Time will tell. I just am hoping to get to see him in the TdF 1 last time.
