Ty Dave, Rugby will never be big in the USA I feel and this is my reason. The game is played without pads, players use 21mm studs on there boots (between 9 - 11 per boot) if a player on the ground is between you and the ball you use your boots to "Ruck" him out of the way (Often just by stomping on his back and legs). I fare rucking in the USA would probably end up in law suites. Over here if a player rucks you with a bit much vigor you simply wait till the next maul then crush his "Gaulies" to paste, all in good humor of course

I applaud you guys for keeping at least that game "true to form".You are correct, our version of football has come down simply to the use of "force". We don't have "cleats" or "studs" on our shoes anymore (we use glorified tennis shoes) & we don't play on real "grass turf". We now play on "plastic grass" (astro-turf). Pepole still get seriously hurt (paralyzation)by bad sportsmanship such as "spearing" (lancing) & "blind-siding" (attacking someone from their "blind-spot". There are other's that are equally dangerous but I don't follow the sport anymore because of a) the outcome has no bearing/relevance on my life. b) I don't have time to devote to the innumerable hour's that must be spent in front of the tele'. I beleive all of this came about simply because of the littany of serious injuries sprawled across the game day field & not lawsuits because players are "well aware" of the dangers inherent in football.

Actually they do use cleats in American football. They are used on many of the real grass fields. The cleats can be from 1" to none. Cleats are used on astro-turf if the surface is wet. If cleats can be avoided then they are. It has nothing to do about safety. Its all about speed. Cleats slow a player down.
American football is all about using speed to exploit the opponents weakness.
