I think in this case it is probably fair to say that he genuinely did
have nothing to protect ;-)

His freedom, apparently.

I've sometimes wondered whether it makes sense for the police to carry
all that stuff around (bits fall off when they run) but it's encouraging
to see how they've turned it to their advantage.
