Default scared of cycling

This will sound pathetic but I have acquired a gorgeous mountain bike and I'm too terrified to use it - never had one as a kid so no experience and certainly no confidence - afraid to drive too, is it connected? Anyway I'm utterly ashamed and want to dosomething about it so wondered is there a club or some organisation that helps build up the confidence of nervous cyclists in the south manchester area?

I had an accident with my road racer back in August. I have had a similar experience, but the other way around. I became a less confident car driver and I do not feel secure or a good driver behind the wheel.

Getting my new road racer within short and have been practicing at slow pace on my second road bike, not chasing new personal best TT achievements, just being on the bike. The confidence is slowly but surely returning but the old killer instinct is not back yet.

Why not try riding your gorgeous bike slowly on safe tarmac roads to start with before going off-road in a more serious manner? I suppose your confidence with your bike will grow and you will become a more confident rider.

Have never heard of any organisation that helps building your cycling confidence apart from joining a local club which, I am sure will help.

Use the bike, respect it, and learn slowly how it works and respond.

Best regards,

Mad Dog

i can sympathise with you buddy as i've only just learnt how to ride a bike at 34 a coule of years ago as my job as a postman demanded it.

well it's just a matter of confidence the more you ride the better you feel and the better bike handler you become.

i recently bought a new cannondale, clipless pedals and all, and have fallen off cos i cant get out of the pedals quick enough a few times, but there you go. although my riding and bike handling have improved there's still a long way to go before i can call myself truley proficient

i do go for early morning runs on a sunday to avoid traffic, but generally haven't had too many bad experiences.

keep going maybe go off road or in the park to get your confidence up and before you know it you'll be on the road flicking v's at all the arseholes who cut you up...lol

PRACTICE MAKES PERFECT...REMEMBER WE ALL HAVE TO START SOMEWHERE

http://www.cycletraining.co.uk/ provides a variety of cycle training at all levels.

Also some London boroughs provide free instruction.

The best source for information is the London Cycling Campaign (http://www.lcc.org.uk/) .

Until last summer I was terrified to cycle in London, but I have acclimatised myself starting with early morning weekend rides, particularly on routes I was considering. Now a regularly cycle commute from Brixton to the City. Am still a bit nervous and shout and swear a lot, but I keep doing it.

Good luck,
Herb
