Question freshmen 15 help!!

Hello,
I am trying to get rid of my excess weight from college. i love biking so i figured the stationary cycles at our rec center would be the best place to start. What is a good cardio/toning program i can do. The bikes come in lounge or regular and go from 1-12 in levels. How many times a week and for how long? ANy help would be greatly appreciated, liz

Hi Liz, how much and how intense your training should be will depend greatly on your current fitness level. Are you currently exercising? Are you 15 pounds over your ideal weight, or are these pounds 'aesthetic'? In other words, do you need to 'lose weight'? If so, then exercise is one part of the equation; healthy eating is the other. Track what you eat for a few days to see how much you need to maintain your weight. You can then calculate what you need to be eating and how much exercise you need to be doing to meet your goals.

A more healthy way to think about this might be to think of regular exercise and healthful eating as components of a healthy and balanced lifestyle. In short, not a quick fix in order to fit some image ideal. Folks are more likely to keep with exercise and healthy eating if they reframe what they're doing, and conceive of it in terms of 'feeling strong and healthy', as helping to prevent illness and disease, and so on.

Best,

Alex
