Default Sydney Commuting - Mona Vale to North Ryde

I am trying to find a suitable daily commuting route from Mona Vale to North Ryde for either Road or MTB. Mona Vale Rd seems OK, except for two areas :-
1) Between the Bahai Temple and Terry Hills, the "on road cycling facilities" to quote the RTA are almost negligible in parts, and with the number of trucks using this route, I'm not convinced it is all that safe, and
2) the underpass at Pacific Highway, with traffic exiting out and later feeding in from the far left lane while you have to ride in the middle of three lanes to go through the underpass.

Has anyone done this commute on a regular basis or can suggest other back street or MTB tracks that would get me along the same route? I would like to be able to ride to work, but not if it leaves me skinless and dinted from all the vehicles using this road.

Cheers,
Dominic
