If you could found and rule over your own country, what kind of government would you choose and why. Examples include, monarchy, communism, capitalism, socialism, or anything else you can think of. Please explain your positions clearly.

In an ideal world both communisim and capitalism would be equally "near perfect" systems. Both rely on those with power (communism) or money (capitalism) to act for the benifit of all and resist human nature to better themselfs first. In the real world I believe communism is still far superiour to capitalism, so that would be my choice. I do believe however that it would be alot harder to control than capitalism. Basic reason is that I believe that under communism the % of people in the "have" basket is a little higher than under capitalism and the gap between "have's" and the "have not's" to be closer. |

Come on now. WIth communism, we ALL would be riding 50 pound, single speeds with solid rubber tires. Compare and contrast the cars of West Germany to the Trabant.
Not my idea of cycling. Oh, but the elite of the government would be riding exotic titanium bikes with infintely variable transmissions, silk casing tires and great handling. But the proletariat would be riding junk. |

You base these comments on what? Russia and China? Im guessing that you are like most people and have no idea what communism is. A hint... the USSR and China have never been communist. |

Geez Weisse, don't you know? Communism works, it just hasn't been tried by the right people yet. The natural yearning of the human spirit is to be free. That is why Cubans risk their lives crossing shark infested waters on crafts made of tires and aluminum to come to the United States. If communism is the "shit", why are people prevented from leaving those countries? Why did East Germany have a wall where people were routinely shot when they tried to get to the other side? Why are North Koreans starving to death? And all those students in Tiananmen Square, why were they massacred? And how many millions of his own people did Stalin kill? <shrug> |

You have got to be kidding. There is no incentive under communism, even in ideal circumstances, to strive to improve your condition or the condition of your fellow man. Everyone shares an equal misery. No rewards whatsoever for your efforts... |

Fixey's point is that the ideal of Communism is probably better than Capitlaism. But of course as Fixey points out, communism as manifested in USSR and China is not communism (in the purest sense). It was more akin to totalitarianism in the former USSR and China. |

No, I believe he was talking about the real world, not just the ideal of Communism. |

I believe he states it right there Lim. Granted, China or USSR might have/had totalitarism as their state structure, but they are/were still considered communist states. |

I don't think communism is bad in theory. But in practice, it just doesn't work. Neither does (laissez-faire) capitalism.

Agreed : I think equality (which is pure communism) is subject to human intervention. |

Since there is much debate about what "communism" is, could you outline your interpretation i.e. how would your communist government and society function etc? You probably won't convince me but I have an open mind and am interested in hearing why you think communism would work, especially when it has failed for so many. |
