Bobcat
I will never forget my most moving experience as a cyclist. I live in an suburban area that is very quickly becoming devolped. Several years ago, a major corridor was carved out of the countryside and designated for development. Before the storm, my husband and I biked the newly carved path. On one particular morning at 6AM we were witness to the sight of an enormous bobcat bounding across the 4 lane. It happened so fast, it was amazing! Her habitat was obviously being destroyed..I felt so sorry for her. This same path a few years later is unrecognizable...and I would never dare to venture forth on a bicycle here.. We have Wendys, and Burger King, and Target, and Wal-Mart, and PetCo, ad nauseum...whenever I have to travel this route, I always remember the bobcat...i can only imagine her desparation.

Last year I got knocked off my bike by a deer. Fortunately neither party was injured beyond the adrenaline shock. The experience, however, did dim the whole back to Nature moment for me for quite some time.

The main roads are wonderful, paved shoulder and everything, but it can be very long and lonely between towns. The campgrounds are mostly "primitive", no showers and very little grass to set up a tent on. Also, they tend to be a little noisey at night, as those Newfies really like to party. All the little "fishing villages" are right down at sea level and you "fly" down a big hill to get into them..........then have to work your butt off getting out. I would say that the scenery is as good as it gets and St. John's is like nothing you have ever seen. Just a wonderful, grand city. The last six blocks, or so, getting down to the docks, the hill is so steep I was afraid to ride my bike down. In fact, the last two blocks, I carried my bike down two flights of stairs. They have it all in Nfld........ice-bergs, whales, moose, caribou, but my wife and I are seniors now and overall, we found the hills and distances, weather, etc. very demanding on our bodies and if we go back, and I do want to go back, it will be with a vehicle..........byfred |
