Me and a mate are thinking of touring from Auckland to Wellington around christmas time. We just want to cruise it all at about 100kms per day. I was wondering how much traning we would need to do. I run daily and bike to work and such but nothign serious. We will have a light tent and I will only have rear panniers.
How much traning will I need to do? |

I did about 100 ks a day touring the south island when I was younger (mid 20s), including the Hope Saddle on a 10 speed with rear panniers, and was reasonably fit (jogging 20 odd and riding a bit every day but not obsessive). Its only the first few days you need to worry about, cos you get 'match fit' as you tour. As for the AK to WN run, I think the North South route is a bit boring and would zig zag down, as there are good hills not on the main highways and away from traffic/ Scenery and stopping points are great everywhere. |
