Default Glucosomine & MSM

Just started to take this stuff since nobody responded to any of my posts concerning tendonitis. For those who have taken Glucosomine & MSM how effective has it been for ya? I take the liquid version@2000mg. Do you have to take this awhile before it builds in your system or does it work right away? Even if you stayed in a Holiday Inn Express last night I want to hear what you got to say.

I'm pretty sure that this is something that needs some time to build up in your system.

I've read it takes up to 2-3 weeks for results to show. I take it and I feel it has been useful.

Glucosomine sulfate is effective with arthritic conditions. MSM on the other hand, should help with elasticity of your muscles. It didn't, however, prevent me from developing tendonitis of the shoulder.

For what it's worth, I've had my knees cut open 3 times. All involved ACL tears. Two of them involved meniscus (cartilage) tears. I used to take glucosamine/msm supplements; until my brother-in-law, who is a pharmacist, informed me that there have been studies to show that these supplements don't really provide any benefit. I stopped taking it and have not noticed any difference, other then one less pill to take. If you want, I can ask him again about that info. and where it can be found.

Just throwing it in my $.02.

I have heard the benefits of Glucosomine & MSM to help tendonitis after it builds up and now I have heard there are no benefits. I have been told I got tendonitis, but I do not know exactly which tendon it is. No X-Rays done. It may be a miniscus, but not sure. The tendonitis is located in my right knee (outside) where if I bend my knee all the way back it hurts in the middle; It is not MCL, but close to it in the middle.

Looks like I just got to stay off the bike for 2 weeks and become an Aleve junkie. I have already backed off my regular rides of 20 miles 3X a week. Seat position is immaculate, stem, etc....I have gone to a lower rear gear or two also to reduce strain on my knee. 42X13 is regular gear ratio. I feel good doing 15-17mph on my Gary Fisher Tass w/slicks for about 10 miles and then the pain starts. This been going on for 5 weeks now..over and over. Could this really be tendonitis or something undiagnosed? I love to ride and would rather ride as part of any physical therapy. Trying to self-heal here because riding is relaxing for me.

That stuff can't hurt (I use it plus sam-E and chondroitin), but you need to figure out what's going on in that knee. Push for an MRI. Tendonitis is a convenient diagnosis from an HMO gatekeeper trying to keep you from more visits and actual help. Demand a specialist if you have to. Going to a shorter crank arm might ease things a bit but you are probably doing more damage by riding with pain. Think erosion. Take a break - pump some iron - or something. Let that knee heal a bit and see an ortho!

Good luck,
Tim

i use glucosomine sulphate, it increases the rate at which colagan is digested, this is used to repair cartliage between joints since the body doesn't absorb quite as much from a normal diet as required.

when i suffered from tenosynovitis i used tetracycline and anti nflamitories, plus RICE this cleared it up within 7 days. the doctor may sugest that you will have had a cut for for it to get infected, i know my doctor did but i took him a medical book and showed him the term and its diagnosis and treatment required.

he was wrong and he was the GP.

Thanx for all the replies. Tetracycline is an antibiotic, right? I have heard Naprocyn (sp?) is also good for tendonitis. I'll make an appointment and ask for a prescription of a good antibiotic I guess. Good stuff to know. You never kno w when THIS COULD HAPPEN TO YOU! Good reads in this forum.

The erosion theory is something freaking me out

I've tightened my right SPD pedal to reduce float alot. I have very little float right now and my knee seems more stable in the peddle stroke. I only ride around town for now with no pain. I'll try a 22 mile ride this weekend to determine whether or not I cry for Naprocyn. I'll post an update so hopefully another person will gain some good information (reason why I like this site).

Again, thanks everyone

Just a little update. I've pinpointed the exact location of problem, but do not know if it is tendon or bone. The top of the Tibula bone is connected to the bottom of the MCL. Some other ligament or tendon also connects to the top of the Tibula. It hurts on top of this bone. Either I have a ligament/tendon problem in this area or I may have bone spurs as a result from a ligament/tendon problem. Sometimes I feel the pain and sometimes I do not, but the pain only goes to a certain point. It's consistently annoying. Something I will definately have to ask X-Rays for. One thing I did was move up my seatpost about 1/4" and actually rode a mile long climb at 8% grade. ABSOLUTELY no problems AT ALL. Because I have had this for a longtime now, I believe bone spurs may be the current situation. If it was more of a tendon/ligament problem I should have been in too much pain on this climb. With my seat raised a 1/4" I may have isolated possible bone spurs. I'll post results of X-Ray information. Taking Orudis has been good when it gets bad.

do you or have you ever suffer from a swollen knee, Fluid on the joint etc.

Some years ago i had a camera in mine and fluid drained from it, anyway the cartlidge was damaged due to wear and tear. my pain used to originate at the bottom right hand quater of the patella. is that where you are refferring to.

you say that you use glucosamine sulphate do you take any extra B vitamins B6, or B Complex, Vit C, etc.....

if not your pretty much wasting your time... look up cartlllage and collagen and which foods

My knee does not swell up at all. Would the swelling be a result of fluid building up? I try to massage the area around my Tibula (very top) when it hurts and I'll notice a red circle around the top of the Tibula (about the size of a quarter) and pain. Looks like a sunburn red. I take Vitamin B Complex 150. I was told Vitamin B1 is good for tendon health. I take the B complex because I feel more energetic all day. I'll schedule an appointment and update later.

yes but it was knee synovitis with effusion, i was refferring to. but exostosis (bone spurs) usually occurs at the site of repeated injury, usually from direct blows. you a footballer or just fall off regular?

During recovery, eat a well balanced diet that includes extra protein, such as meat poultry cheese milk and eggs, your doctor may have already suggested vitamin and mineral supplements to promote healing

leg hematoma, lower leg

anything like that, if not have you ruled out fractures or stress fractures

Hi cojosurfer.

Swelling or fluid in the knee is the sign of serious knee damage. If you're knee ever swells it's important to see a doctor immediately.

Regarding the float in your cleat, I think you've done the opposite of what you should have done. SPDs don't have a lot of float to begin with and whatever float they give you is easier on the knee. If you're foot isn't stable through out your pedal stroke, your knee will move around a lot which isn't good. However, limiting your float will only turn that movement into lateral torsion on the knee, which is even worse.

If I'm reading you right and you're trying to limit the lateral movement of your knee (ie, your toes changing the direction they're pointing as you move through your pedal stroke) by limiting your float, then you must fix "why" that's happening as opposed to limiting the movement. In this case, most people would try to correct the problem with a wedge shim between the cleat and shoe or a custom orthotic.

Turns out I got a Lateral Ligament Sprain. In my case it is not so much a sprain, but more like a scratch on the Ligament. I have rested it for 3 weeks. Bummer too. I rode for a little bit today around town and I can feel I have to get back some fitness lost. I'll be back to what I was doing. When I squat down like a catcher it still hurts, but not as bad as 3 weeks ago. I'll take it easy around town for a week and then go into a more scheduled routine.

I am leaving my pedals alone as far as float goes. My position is solid right now after I used the Greg LeMond method with the plumb line. Before this position I got involved in a little club race. I finished third, but my knee was OVER the pedal axle by 3 inches at the 3 o'clock position. I do not recommend this to anybody. Lesson learned the hardway and I hope a new guy can take notice. Very important to get proper seat position height, fore/aft, and a good seat that has a channel that will take off pressure to the tail bone and allow better blood flow to the legs. At least for some people this may apply. Good riding everyone.
