Hi
First of all I would like to say that I can't be even considered a sub-amateur cycler. I'm 25 and I'm having this problem. I have recently switched to a sedentary life-stile (office work ). When I didn't have a job, I used to graze rather than eat, and I didn't have any nutrition-related problems. But since I've been having this job, I am forced to eat meals at regular times of day. After a few hours I'm beginning to feel violent hunger, every day, my whole metabolism seems to have turned upside down. And along with that almost chronic fatigue seems to come too. Other people here at work don't seem to be bothered by this. After I return home I am forced to eat a lot, because by then my stomach would begin to ache, and riding the bike for fitness after that is out of question, evidently. In the last 8 months I have gained almost 12 kgs, i used to have 58 kgs, at 1.75, now I have 70 kgs! You can imagine where those kilos have gone. In the weekend, two eggs seem to suffice for 5-6 hours of riding the bike (well, maybe some wafers except that ), and even after I return home, I don't experience that strong hunger.I would like some advized opinion about what should I change in order to get rid of this almost continuous hunger-sensation and fatigue that I experience lately, and avoid losing my shape completely. |

I used to feel hungry between meals until a few years ago...I split my three major meals into 6 smaller ones, spaced about 3 hrs apart. If you do that you shouldnt be hungry....helps regulate your blood sugar too.

You know, It might not be hunger causing you the stomach pain; it could be acid reflux. I suggest this because it had been a problem of mine when I was eating more junky foods.
Next time you feel the pain, drop a couple of Tums tablets. If they make the pain go away, its acid reflux. If so, you will want to talk to your doctor about controlling it through diet and / or prescriptions. (ie Prevacid, Tums, Zantac).

Two Suggestions:
1) In high school I was gaining weight for football heavily (gained 27% of total body mass in 2 years while reducing fat to under 10%). Because of this, I needed a lot of protein and overall calories - so a friend suggested "The Two Hour Plan". Basically, just eat every two hours to keep your body fueled. Example, I'd go to Subway and buy a foot-long and eat half now and half in 2 hours. It kept me going. 2) Snack on fruit - I do it all day in my office. ![]() |

<--- I'm a grazer so to speek.
Preparing food for me to take with me to work takes some time. I usually keep some milk and a box of cereal at work. (usually enough to last a week) I bring a bag of Utz Extra dark Pretzels, Carrots, Couple slices of bread (I keep Peanut Butter and Jelly in the fridge at work too). A banna or two (today I have an apple) all this in addition to my regular lunch. I try to keep my lunch around 300-400 calories because of my constant snacking. |

Do you eat the two eggs for breakfast every morning during the week, or just skip breakfast? If you're eating a high-carb or sugar breakfast during the week, then drinking coffee at the office, your blood sugar levels could be dropping after a couple of hours....which would cause the hunger. Believe the fix is to have the substantial protein breakfast every morning, and skip the milk, sugar, and hi-glycemic starch, at least until after your bike ride is done. |

I would start with eating LOW GI carbs, so no bananas, they are as high GI as you get almost. So, healty brekkie with lots of fiber and then two more healthy meals during the day. If this does not work, try eating smaller meals, more often as described by others. I have a very high metabolism myself, and if I want to train after work, I eat brekkie, an hour hour or two later, then push the lunch to three o clock, so I am fresh around 18/19 when I want to go for a spin. This works for me anyway. Good luck, and keep those michelin things on your bicycle, not your body. ![]() |

i try and eat a reasonable amount of fat with each meal. fat requires hormones bile salts etc... and these can help you remain feeling full for longer periods of time plus its a good source of energy as long as you don't totally neglect carb intake. don't be to conserned about consumming fat, you wont store it if your are using it. if your using large amounts of calories you'll use the fat source also. |

Maybe someone can answer this for me: if your stomach is growling, does it always mean you're hungry? Or can it also mean your stomach is "working"? I get growling alot more than before, yet I'm NOT feeling hungry.

Give me a rough idea about your normal diet. and activities.... usually for me its an indication to eat, but truthfully a walk past the fridge or biscuit barrel is a good enough reason to eat stuff my face. .> Not Wind, Acid or something < ... |

me or instance 4.00am before work 1 big bowl of porridge \ or 3 shreddies 2 cups of coffee 6.00am 1 cup of coffee 9.00am 2\3 toaste beans 2 sausage 2 ashe browns 1 egg 1 bacon 1 large esspresso 6 sugars.... 11.20am (depends if i feel hungry) cake and custard or salad 13.00pm salad or snack (sleep) 17.00pm chips pie peas gravy with bread (depends what everyone wants to eat) 19.00pm half litre of fizzy pop. more tea coffee etc.... unless its friday then its chineese night.... (wandering dragon-with crispy seaweed.....Hmmm!) (during the day i may have a slimfast\but i always have one carbo drink during the day) sometimes just why i'm at work or on my way there... just snacking fruit chrisp biscuits (sweets etc) i never really feel hungry! have you ever thought that you where really restricting your dietry requirements, i mean like using more energy than your putting in. if that is the case then you will soon begin to feel the effects of overtraining and malnutrition....... just for instance after a ride.... 3lb of steak, mushrooms, onions, carrots potatoes (stew) half cabbage....... |

I think maybe you're right, it just is that when I workout intensely, my appetite seems to go down. Also, if I'm depressed over something, I lose my appetite too. Sometimes I have to force myself to eat. Also, I have to eat lowerfat food for a health condition, so I have to watch the fats.
