Default Eating on the bike and Diabetes

Being a diabetic, I have found a new opportunity that I have not found much help for on the web. On longer rides, I can feel my sugars going low (under 60 a few times.) I have tried a variety of different things and seemed to have found a combination that works O.K. Be interested in other peoples solutions (I do like taking 4-6 hour rides.)
I found that most energy bars had too many carbs and would spike my sugars. What I ended up with is Lunar bars and Ultima replenisher drink.

Default Re: Eating on the bike and Diabetes

I am by no means an expert, but I am a Type I diabetic who has been riding a fair bit in the past few months. My personal opinion is that as diabetics the key is really protein. I like the Clif Bars for their protein content. They allow for a slow sugar availability over the course of the ride. I also drink gatorade for the quick sugar intake and for hydration obviously.

The heat makes the whole process much tougher for me though and has resulted in a higher intake of proteins before and during the ride when hot.

Hope it helps...
