They're in Germany this year.. maybe it's some kind of traditional
Deutsche(?) cycle-wear?

More here: http://www.lederhosenmuseum.de/Klederhosenmuseum1.html

It looks like a big yabbie has bitten him on the arse as he rode past...

I'm now taking bids for the advertising space: Peak hour commute ridden
for maximum exposure... ;-)

<pondering> Hmm.. HPV-style, full fairing SS bouncing around the
Castlemaine mtb course... Cue evil glint in eye... </pondering>

Yes, while yelling DERBY! DERBY! to the other riders.

Or fill up the tail box with stubbies as ballast?

I hear real italian leather is really soft, you could get knicks and a
jersey made for as little about $2000.

Does this mean contestents will have to wear leather knicks... with a
lycra chamois? :-)

Come to think of it, leather long knicks and jerseys might be
uncomfortable as heck, but they'd be useful in a spill...

(Off on a really silly tangent now...) Going with the regional attire
thing, if the next-after-next SSWCs were held in near Oxford or
Cambridge or similar, would riders be compelled to wear tweed knicks and
jerseys, with leather patches on the elbows? The wool factor would be
kind of very old skool, too...

I wonder how many Italians they have to sacrifice to get a pair of
knicks and a jersey made from Italian leather?

Then again, for two grand they can't be THAT expensive - or a little
goes a long way.
