Default Stage 17 - What was the exchange between Jan and Lance?

Near the end of Stage 17 Lance and Jan had some sort of an exchange involving a few words and some hand gestures. I've not heard much comment on this but it didn't look terribly friendly. I've heard one suggestion that Lance was upset because Jan wouldn't go to the front and work with the other riders but nothing to substantiate this. Does anyone know what that was all about?

I just re-watched that stage last night - I was watching it to see how not to complete a sprint (Kloden !).
But yeah I saw that incident where Landis went away with about 7kms to go and Ullrich chased, then LA soloed and caught up with them.
Ullrich starts talking to LA and is gesturing.

Was he saying to LA that he was going to be marking Landis ?
Did LA say something to Ullrich ?

Ullrich appeared to be very emphatic with whatever he was saying to LA.
Sean kelly on Eurosport said that he thought that Ullrich was saying to LA
that he (JU) wasn't going to merely let Landis win the stage without a fight.
But Sean was guessing like the rest of us.

It was because during those hand gestures, basso was dropped. LA told JAN to goto the front if he wanted to gain 20-30 seconds on basso. Ullrich actually wanted postal to pull, even after basso was dropped.

I think you have it right. The 3 had a definite break on Kloden and Basso and Ullrich wanted postal to continue the break. They chose to let up as they didn't want to drag Ullrich to the finish. The only reason I can think of why Jan would not go right then and there is he would be attacking his team mate Kloden. For me I think Jan should have made a mad dash when postal pulled up to wait for Kloden and Basso. I'm not an Ullrich fan, but I don't hate him either and I like to see good raceing. It was dissappointing to see him wast such an opportunity.

You are correct. I saw an interview with Landis on TV shortly after that stage where he was asked this very question.

LA wanted to give Landis the stage because Landis did all the work. At the summit, LA turned to Landis and said something like this:

LA: Want to win a stage in the TdF?

FL: Well.....yeah!

LA: Can you go downhill quickly?

FL: HELL YEAH!

LA: Then ride it like you stole it!

Landis took off, and JU reacted. When LA saw JU react, he followed. Landis said that once being chased down by JU, they motioned for JU to take his turn at working, but he wasn't having any of it.

LA said later that if JU or Kloden wasn't going to let Landis take the stage, then he wouldn't let them have it either. What happened next needs no explanation.

It's all a matter of spin control.

JU got what he deserved ... not being on the podium. I don't think I saw him pulling in any stage, just sitting on Postal's wheels. I think LA has to ride next year's TdF just to make JU pull for Klödi ... assuming JU doesn't jump ship.
