Default Newbie question on pedal s & Shoes

I just received a Giant Yukon with Shimano PD-324 pedals and Shimano
SH-M120 shoes as a gift. I am new in using cycling shoes and clip pedals
but when I try to clip the shoes in the pedals they don't seem to clip
not sure if I am doing it wrong? When I went to the Shimano website it
is telling me that for the shoes they recomend that I use the PD-M540
and PD-M520 pedals. What should I do, would I have to exchange the
pedals or shoes or is their something else I could could do. Wouldn't
the sales person that sold the bike to my parents with the pedals know
what shoes suited them?

Thanks

Those shoes might be a little heavy duty for those pedals, but they should
work fine. If you can't figure out how to clip in, ask the salesman to show
you how.

There are probably hundreds of shoes that will work fine with the pedals you
have. Have you installed the cleats int he pedals? If so have you done it
with the arrow pointing to the front and the ridged end against the shoe?
You might need to remove a tab over the hole for the cleats before
installing the cleats.

erm.. you mighht need to adjust the tension on the pedals. If memory serves
the pedals are shipped with the spring tension way up.

The -324 pedals are reversible (it's the kind I have), with SPD on one
side and a platform for toe clips on the other; make sure you're using
the correct side with your cleats. You have mounted the cleats on the
shoes, haven't you?
