Default Bottom Bracket Question

I am upgrading almost all of the components on my bike to XT stuff. I
got a new XT crankset and am wondering if I can use the crankset with my
old bottom bracket. The old bottom bracket is an old thing from about
1997. Any input? Thanks.

Just so that you know, and you don't just say, "Why don't you upgrade
the bottom bracket now?!" The answer is that budget constraints prohibit
me from doing so. (Can you guess where my money went?)

If your new XT crankset is splined, then you need a Shimano splined BB. (I
suggest Ultegra, but that's just me.)

If not the 2004 one piece XT crank, ala XTR, you need a ES-70 Octalink BB. Buy
a few of them cuz they are going away, since that crank and the LX is also.

The XT and LX are a different Octalink spline pattern than DA, ultegra, 105 and
XTR. In fact the XT is unique in length(113/116) and is different in length
from the LX but has the same Octalink design and specs.

Try it. The tapers are the same, only thing that might have changed is
the spindle length, so you can't damage anything.
