Default Meaning of front derailer "top-mid min teeth" spec

I have an XTR front der (FD-M950, c. 1998?) that I would like to try
with a 38-48 double crank. However, the specs for this derailer show 12T
as the "Top Mid min. teeth diff." Does this mean that the derailer won't
work with a 38-48 double crank? I think I've found older posts that
indicate people are running with this setup but I'd like to double-check
before I start bolting things together.

The reason I want to do this is that I have a 'cross frame with a 34.9
seat tube and top-pull routing. I realize I could use a bottom-pull road
front der if I could rig a pulley, but I'm not sure I can find a clamp
in the right diameter and it looks like I'd have to buy a braze-on road
front der + adapter clamp to fit the fat seat tube. All things
considered it would probably be easier for me to fit the M950 and use
bar end shifters.

Thanks in advance,

JLS

The reason it would not "work" is that the inner plate is considerably
lower than the outer plate, so if set up in the standard way, it would rub
on the inner chainring. But I see no reason why you can't just set it up
a little higher than standard; that is, as if the outer ring were a 50.
Then it should work. The larger clearance for the big ring might make it
possible to over-shift the front, so be careful to adjust it properly.
Other than that there is no reason why it would not work.
