Default Brakes for tandem

Cannondale has put Avid ball bearing disk brakes on their 2004 Road
tandem. Does anybody know these brakes ? How good are they ? Is this a
good idea to put them on a (road) tandem ? Do they represent a significant
advantage over the Avid shorty cantilevers that Trek puts on their tandems ?

Thanks for any input.

I have well over thirty thousand miles on my Hayes Disks on my recumbent
single bike. I have ordered disks on our 'bent tandem, now being built. I
think that there advantages in disks over any rim brake.

I hope they used the 203mm rotor. Excellent.

How does a mechanical disc on a road bike have advantages over a rim brake on a
road bike?

I think on a tandem, discs are a good idea, on a '1/2 bike', single bike,
whether it be a 'bent' or upright, they are a costly, complicated brake.

1. Works even when wet.

B. Doesn't cause rim wear.

I'm less sure they're a good idea for tandems, given current technology.

I don't believe any mechanical discs are "tandem rated" and the greater
stress on spokes could be an issue...tandems already have enough spoke
breakage problems.

If you poke around this link
<http://home.att.net/~thetandemlink/hobbes.html> there is a search
engine specific to tandems and you can find maybe a hundred plus
messages specific to your question. The 203 mm Avid disk is a hot
item to have but no better in stopping the bicycle than a well setup
Canti, Direct pull, or Dual pivot brake.

You will see that it is a very controversial topic.

IMHO the dual pivot with an additional drum brake is the best,
overall braking system for a tandem. The disk brake is not a drag
brake.

So does my Record brakeset.

I smack rims way before I wear out the sidewall..Only done that once in 20
years of riding.
