But...but...Mike's gone out and taken unclear pictures with his Brownie!
These so-called scientific studies don't begin to compare.

Naaa

<Mikey1>
"By Gary Sprung, International Mountain Bicycling Association"

Of COURSE this 'study' is flawed. Look who wrote it!

or

<Mikey2>
See. Mountain bikers DO cause damage. You guys finally admit it. Just
because other types of human travel in wilderness areas cause damage is no
reason not to ban bikes!
</Mikey2>

Pete
which will it be, Mikey?

He's had no trouble ignoring the studies themselves, he'll have no problem
ignoring the summary.

Well, since the study was sponsored by IMBA and conducted by somebody
affiliated with IMBA, Mikey will clearly state that they cannot possibly be
objecting and clearly lied in conducting their research. After all, all
mountain bikers, including international ones are known liars right?

How decidedly accurate.

Shaun aRe - Don't waste your time, folks.

Funny thing is, the author of that article is a pretty well-known guy around
these parts. He's headed up a very active and vocal anti-development,
anti-ski area group called HCCA (High Country Citizen's Alliance). They're
generally regarded as fringe kooks by "regular" (people who work for a
living instead of having trust funds) folks.
I guess it's all a matter of perspective.

Matt (got lots of anecdotal evidence that horses and motorcycles are way
worse than bikes - duh!)

Well...it was jut too easy. And I had one concept wrong. Should have used
'and' instead of 'or'.

Don't make me laugh. Anyone who bothers to read these "studies" will find that
they actually prove the OPPOSITE of what they CLAIM to prove! They actually
examine only damage PER MILE. Since mountain bikers typically travel several
times as far as hikers (try HIKING 25-50 miles in a day!), it follows FROM THEIR
OWN RESEARCH that mountain bikers have several times the impact of hikers. They
also don't test mountain biking under normal conditions: they simply roll
passively down a gently sloping hill -- no acceleration, no turns, no braking,
all of which would apply shear (horizontal) forces to the ground. In addition,
almost all studies ignore impacts on wildlife. As far as I know, every one of
these "studies" was done by (surprize, surprize) a mountain biker. Besides, they
are irrelevant, because the harm done by mountain biking is not related to the
harm done by other activities, such as hiking. The damage is the same,
regardless of what hikers or anyone else is doing!

I am working on creating wildlife habitat that is off-limits to
humans ("pure habitat"). Want to help? (I spent the previous 8
years fighting auto dependence and road construction.)

That all goes without saying.
