Not to get into the LoCarb fight - (I will say bad idea for serious cycling) but Power Bar's Protein Plus & I think another one is called Balance Bar Gold + or something along those lines are pretty decent. |

There are some very low carb energy pills called pseudoephedrine - aka Sudafed. Just don't overdose. |

THe whole idea of an energy bar is that it contain a large amopunt of high quality energy in the form of carbohydrate. A protein or recovery bar wont and that's why you cant call it an energy bar, it doesn't contain easily digestible energy. If you eat when you ride you should always consume carbs (i never eat energy bars any more anyway, they're a waste of money - no substitute for real food). Your stomach won't be able to cope with much protein at all.

Well said Tafi. Trick is to get around 60 grams of carbs per hour from sources that won't upset your stomach when you're going at high HR. I like a bit of Gatorade, plus the little sandwich cracker packs. Some guys here can tolerate the high sugar without stomach upset, and go for sticky-sweet chocolate bars, PayDay peanut bars, or cookies...whatever works for you is the ticket. Forget energy bars.....the cost of bottled water and Gatorade is high enough. I need to buy about a liter/hour on the hottest days now after my first two bottles are gone. That's more than a dollar an hour just for fluids from the country quick stops. |
