OLN has decided to have Bob Roll and Al Trautwig call the
majority race during prime time. The Tour now for me has become unbearable to watch or at least listen to. The differnce is night and day between the Ligget/Sherwin team and the TrautRoll team. My wife who has no interest in cycling whatsoever actualy enjoys watching the tour when Phil and Paul are calling the race. Roll has his place but, he certainly should not calling The Tour. My kids, 12 and 13, can't stand it either. We had to finally change the channel last night. There is no substitute or replacement for the masters Phil and Paul. They had a big impact in my decision to get a road bike(did a lot of mtb before). Just the way they call a race makes you want to get out and ride. I don't know what OLN is trying to do. If the format stays I will be watching less of the Tour this year and OLN. |

I was doing the exact same thing last night, and my wife (who is like yours when it comes to biking on TV) said the exact same thing. You guessed it, we stopped watching. It could be worse, but not much. Bring back Phil and Paul on primetime! |

(Benefit- skip very very long commercials) I suspect most people who live or lurk here can't stomach the Al and Bob duo. Unfortunately non-cyclists don't seem to like it much either. It will be interesting to see if any adjustments are made to the coverage a the race goes on. Three weeks is a long time. Bill |

THANK YOU!!! I was thinking the exact same thing. Bob Roll
is horrible at calling the action. Half the fun of watching the tour is listening to Ligget. Now I'm tuning in mornings instead of evenings. How loud did you scream before 1998 when ESPN covered the race with ABC (and CBS even) so excellently. Pathetic man, really pathetic whining from you. YOU SHOULD have it so good. Not. -KJP |

I was thinking that I like Bob Roll a lot better when I
don't have to watch him waiving his hands around, so I didn't mind his commentary at all. Did anyone else hear Al Troutwig ask this question to S.
Crow about Lance and her "When the fans are gone and cameras are off, What is it like just you and him or somebody else? What is he talking about a 3-some? Seriously, I am not sure what he was trying to say but it sure came out wrong! |

Trautwig sounds like a pro announcer with enough cycling knowledge. But I also have the advantage of watching the Tour much of each day. I see each stage at least 1-1/2 times, so I get plenty of P&P too. Too bad about the old mortgage though. -- -- Lynn Wallace http://www.xmission.com/~lawall "We should not march into Baghdad. ... Assigning young soldiers to a fruitless hunt for a securely entrenched dictator and condemning them to fight in what would be an unwinnable urban guerilla war, it could only plunge that part of the world into ever greater instability." Roll is actually not bad sometimes when he is paired with Phil and Paul. Phil and Paul are excellent for the fine points during the race. Al and Bob are more the funny crew who crack jokes and give a semi-serious view of the tour without the fine points. It serves those who want the fast take on the tour as where Phil and Paul serves the more devoted cycling fanatics who want all the details. I like both for now, I have seen much worse over the years. OLN for the most part do a bang up job. Anyone who says they can't stand it and need to change the channel shouldn't be watching it anyway. Go watch some Sci-fi movies. TCM had a run on them the other nights. That really takes the cake alright. |
