a few days ago, i was powering up a very steep hill in the saddle. i felt a "snap" in my lower back and i felt very brief pain throughout my pelvis area, and down both legs. i eased up on the pedals, then started pedaling hard again and it hurt again. i stood up and pedaled and the pain was gone.
a day later, my lower back feels very, very stiff. i fear i have done damage to a lower disk. does anyone have any experience with this type of injury?? i am not prone back problems. i am 47 YO, 163 lbs, and have been cycling regularly for 12 years. |

Sorry, only thing I can suggest is a doctor or a chriopractor - I would do that before anymore cycling. Probably not what you wanted to hear, but hell at age 47 you got what 60 or more years of riding ahead of you - better safe than sorry. |

Stay away from chiro's. If you are only feeling a bit stiff after a few days you probably only have some muscle injury. Using high gears during seated climbing is putting the lower back under great strain as all the resistance is hinged in the lower back. That is one of the ongoing dangers of the natural pedaling style. With linear pedaling, all resistance is hinged in the hips. Acupuncture works best to heal these injuries because unlike the chiros, it will never make it any worse but you probably don't even need that, it will heal itself. Linear pedaling uses a completely different method when applying the power to the pedal, direct downward pressure is never used, instead power is applied as if attempting to forcibly slide the cleat into the back side of the old style pedal. This method also enables you to safely make maximum use of arm resistance when seated during tt's or climbing. It was the technique that was used continuously by Anquetil. |
