Question New

G'day i'm a 16 yearold from Newcastle australia. I was just wondering how hard is it to get into track cycling? how fit do you have to be(at my age)? what speed should you be able to reach on a flat road? and is there any chance of starting on a duel suspension MT bike (its quick i've it 48km/h on the flat (is that good) (top speed down hill 74km/h.) Thankyou for any advice i'm very keen after watching the world titles from melbourne on SBS sports

THANKS

Hi

MTB's and velodromes don't mix

Some clubs will have track bikes they'll let you use if your interested in giving it a go. However, the track season doesn't start for another 5 or 6 months so road racing will give you an opportunity to build some endurance and bunch skills in the meantime.

Check out your local cycling club, i'm sure Newcastle has a good one.

cheers

This link (as you probably have guessed) will take you to the nsw cycling homepage. On the left there is a link to clubs where you should be able to find one in your area. Although it helps to be fairly fit you dont have to be as most clubs should have grades for riders with different abilities. Most that run track races will also have handicap races at each meet where the less experienced/ not quiet as fast riders get given a certain amount of head start on the faster riders.

This link may give you some interesting reading, particularly the "An Overview of Track Racing - By Jeff Jones & John Stevenson" link. Don't worry about the price of bikes in this link as your club will most likely let you borrow a bike. On this page (under the cyclocross link at the top) there is a link "What's a Wheelrace?" This should help explain handicap racing for you.

You might find this interesting as well (the tasmanian christmas carnivals page, but I'm just putting it there in case anyone is interested in coming to tassie over christmas for a race.

Hope I didnt bore you too much. Remember that if youve got any problems or questions dont be afraid to ask. Good luck and keep us posted on how you go.
