Default Recommend a Bike anyone??

Hi there, i am going to be buying my first bike since i was 13 y/o. ~13 years ago.

I see Giants and Treks are still about which is good as at least i recognise names.
I am wanting to spend £250 - £300 on a bike, preferably at the 250 side but i have been informed by a friend that i would need to spend at least £300 to get a decent bike.

Can anyone recommend a bike in that price range. 5 days a week its gonna be used getting me to work and back on road but on the weekend i want to go offroad as have moved out to the country. I noticed you get Hybrids these days which would be useful for my road journeys but travel is only 2 miles each way and i aint sure about how good the hybrids would be on trails.

Can anyone lend me there experience and advice? Whether i should just stick to a mountain bike or perhaps a hybrid and a good deal for 250-300 quid.

Cheers

Phil

OK, hybrids on trails is not a good idea, it can be done but its not a good idea. If your traveling 4 miles per day 5 days a week thats 20 miles a week, you could do that in a morning on a trail somewhere. I think that if you compromise then you should compromise in the direction of the trail. That is buy the mountain bike, it will commute well enough and give you pleasure every weekend, and as you ride to work on monday you can admire your covering of mud and reminisce fondly of the weekends ripping it up. 300 pound, whats that 800$Australian? you should get a neat Giant or Trek for that, Iguana disk?
cheers, let us know what you buy.

Hi there, cheers for the advice!

I have noticed you can get a Giant Rincon for £250 or a Giant Yukon for £300.
Do you know if the Giant Rincon is a good bike? Would prefer to spend a little less than £300 so have cash left over for extras.

I have the 2004 Rincon and commute 40 k a day on it, weather permiting. It has also done weekend trail and one four day solo ride through the hills and bush south of here. I think its a great bike and it fitted my budget and experience level perfectly. However I always look a little enviously at the next big thing around I guess thats just human nature. I'd buy the best bike you can afford, in this price range upgrades post purchase are usually worth nearly as much as the bike if you start to get serious.

i think i'll go for the 2004 rincon aswell. I'm a beginner and still need to buy all the other stuff, helmet, repair kit and all that jazz. Can't wait, weather starting to get good over here (Edinburgh, Scotland) although i'm sure not as good as you get in Oz.
Start getting fit and making the most of the hills just a few miles away from my new house.
Going to Australia next december for a few weeks over christmas and new year. Going to visit friends in Brisbane and Sydney. I don't think i would be able to bike at that time of year though, the weather is gonna kill me over there, i struggle to move in anything over 30 degrees C.

40k a day! Thats good going man. How long does that take?
Anyhow, cheers again for the advice - Rincon it is for me - untill the salesman tries to put me off it and talks me into buying something more expensive

Cheers
