Default Cable Maintenance

I would like to hear how often people tighten/inspect their cables. How often do you find adjustments are necessary? How extensively do you adjust (use tuning devices on brakes and shifters vs. tuning with tools @ workshop)? How often do you replace cables?

I generally operate on an as-needed basis based on sensory input from the bike, with periodic inspections. I have yet to replace my cables. What kind of life should I expect from the cables? When replacement is necessary, how obvious is the necessity? I am anxious to see what I may learn from replies.

I inspect and lube after every muddy ride. During the dry season I neglect them a bit, I check and lube about once a month. I will replace if they show any sign of breaking down, frayes... I do not use tensioners or stretches when installing them. As for adjusting, I will stop during a ride if it is not shifting right. Once you do it a few times you will be a master. I can adjust my cable on the rear without any significant heart-rate drop. As for the life of cables, all depends on how clean they stay. You have make sure to slide the housings so you can inspect under them.

Hope that helps.

I agree with Ron.

You might like an article by Sheldon Brown on cables:
