Aside from energy bars and gels, what other simple and easy to carry cycling foods are there?

Bananas & PB&J's. I have carried both of these in my jersey before. Of course the sandwich was in a bag.

Dried dactyls and figs. Espetially dactyls are worth trying. I did spend a lot of $$ on energy bars but since i've come across them i buy bars only for racing purpose and long (3hr+) rides. I don't enjoy eating 3 packets of dried fruit one after another, and that's why use bars.

They have a plenty of energy (+-270kcal/100gr) and are very cheap (0.5$/150g in Poland). And they taste very good.

Dactyls are easier to chew while riding, espetially when going (really) hard.

Didn't try dinosaur meat as an ergogenic but who knows....

I had in mind a kinda friuit that grows on a palm in the oasis in the middle of the desert.

In Poland we call it 'daktyle'.

i did use an online translator and according to itpolish 'daktyle' is english 'dactyls'.

Do you know what do I mean?
If no, i'll try to find a latin name, used in biology Hope it'll be better.

This stuff is really good, i have been using it for some time and my stomach prefers them to any energy bars.

don't know why the translator doesn't translate daktyle=>dates but dactyls but DOES translate dates=>daktyle.

Finally i did manage to let You know what i was thinking about.

Did you try dates?
What do you think about them?
Most of my friends are sceptic but i don't feel huge difference between dates and bars when it's about performace and tastyness and i surely feel a difference in my wallet

Yash: Believe dactylus is the latin name for the date palm. The name comes from the latin and greek root meaning finger. Your ability to write in clear english is impressive.

Dates are a great source of concentrated sugar energy; I've eaten them on the bike along with nuts to provide a bit of protein and fat. I also carry pancakes sometimes. If I'm having them for breakfast, it's easy to make a couple extra and take them on the ride with me. You can put these foods in a small plastic bag and carry a lot of calories easily with these foods.

Agree the bars are costly for what you get. I think common foods like dried fruits, nuts, peanut butter and breads work just as well. I usually buy small packs of peanut butter or cheese crackers at rest stops here; don't know if they are available in Poland.

didn't try cheese crackers. But I belive that peanut butter is good. I did also think about Nutella. I eat a lot of it during winter months. It gives plenty of energy, and i don't feel so cold after eating some of it.

Lately, i did come across an idea of eating pancakes on the bike. I can make some without using any fat and fry (or better dry ) them on a teflon pan. Then putting on some energy-rich product such as jam may be a good idea. They are tasty, give a plenty of energy and are easy to chew.

Pancakes sound interesting, but how did you plan to carry them? In a bag in your pocket? Aren't pancakes quite large?

Please report if you try it and perhaps I can avoid making a couple of mistakes. I'm looking for new easy-to-chew food and pancake should meet all the requirements on "food for success".

Fruit Leathers are good and I am going to try some dried apricots tomorrow.

I think dates (pitted of course) might be really awesome, I'll try those soon!

I also bring energy bars (Clif bars, Odwalla bars, Pria bars and Protein Plus) but I am liking the fruits as they provide a more immediate energy kick and take the place of the Gels.

I used to eat these but I got tired of replacing my shorts. Plus, no one ever wanted to let me lead.
