Default large frames for the track?

I was wondering if anyone could varify this question on sizing. Is it true that track frames are supposed to be fitted larger than road frames for the same size person? I was told that I needed a 62cm track frame for my dimensions (186cm ht. 86cm inseam) In a road frame I apparently take a 59cm. I won"t even be able to stand over the 62cm track frame. - is this usually the case? do you guys ride 'em that big.

Hello there, I see that you are in Tokyo? I live and race in Japan, also. (in Hokkaido) If you go to a site like the Competitivecyclist.com, they have a fitting program where you can input your measurements to get a ballpark figure to start from, both road and track. However, this is only a guide, of course. I also ride a smaller track frame than on the road, like the previous poster; but this can also depend on how the frames themselves are measured. Prevailing wisdom, however, has many people riding smaller frames on the track, because generally speaking, the seat tube angle is steeper on a track frame, which in turn means that the same length top tube as your road frame would be too long for you. This is the same idea as in fitting a tt frame or a triathlon frame with a steep angled seat tube and a lowered head tube. One last thing to keep in mind: if you were sized at a Japanese shop (not using something like the Panasonic fit machine, for example), then they will tend to recommend a larger size than is needed for most foreigners. Also, common sense tells us that not being able to stand over the frame would not be very healthy for the nether-regions in the event of a crash, not to mention starts for events like points race, etc. Good Luck!
