Hey gals,
To motivate myself this season, I was thinking of signing up with my cycling organization, signing up for some racing clinics and maybe entering a race or two. Strictly the lowest competitive rung on the ladder! The thing is, I have NO CLUE about what level I need to be at to even bother entering a race. Is there a benchmark for females? For example, maintaining a certain speed for an hour or something? Right now, I know I am too slow but I would like a goal to set for myself and work towards it. I know I could enter and finish last but I would rather not embarass myself in a public race situation. I just want a general idea like "maintaining 20mph for an hour" or whatever a good standard is. Thanks. |

Look up the racing assoc. in your area (www.tbra.org in mine) and look up some of the results from last year's or earlier this year's races. You'll race cat 5 and with other women, in our state races. I don't think it's unattainable; just difficult. I've been training as well. I think I need to ride more with a group before I get serious about training, though.

Nice name .. I say go for it. I entered my 2nd race last week .. I had no idea what the hell I was up to most of the time. I have wanted to do this for years; but, never had the guts. I had the same feelings as you. Good point above about checking out times etc from old races - I did that. I also hooked up with a buddy of mine from the cycling club I joined. He has done duo's/tri's/running/marathons etc so he was a good guide. He goes along (gets dragged along actually) with me to race. Tell me some good info. He does his race and I do mine. As I have only done a few of these I have to keep in mind why I am doing this and it is for "me" and I don't have to prove anything. It is hard to not want to "compete" too hard and burn myself out. I was happily surpised with results and my race and I think you will be also. There are many shape/sizes/abilities in these races. One of mine had an elite class for m & f's so they kinda went off first and that was cool - I didn't feel like a snail in a rabbit race! It gave me a good insight into how I race/how I am doing physically cos I am following a new program and what I need to work on. If I want to get better what I have to do! I met some nice folks who are as scared as I/you and that made me feel better. I wasn't a newbie after all! Good luck if this reaches you before you go into some races! |
