Ok, firstly, I have NEVER sat on or riden a MTB, im a trackie, I HATE hills for a start, but while in my LBS today I heard some guys state that they where MTB raceing in the 60's, one even still has his bike. Funny thing is I thought NTB started much later than that. anyone help?

Maybe they were thinking of cyclocross? That was what the Euro road pros used to do in winter-time to keep their form up.
I think MTBing (in the modern sense) started in the 70s by Tom Ritchey, Gary Fisher etc.
