I doubt that very much. If he is struggling in the plains due to his wrists, how is he going to do well in the mountains? He is currently placed last.

Yeah but your last sentence is irrelevant TDL. The worse his placing... the less likelihood anyone is going to chase him if he makes a break. So it would make winning mountain stages and possibly the KOM jersey easier.

Having said that... if it's a break... it's not going to improve in the next three weeks. And he abandoned at the Giro after suffering through nine stages with a broken scaphoid... so he knows the futility of the suffering.

Sure, the fact that he is placed last is irrelevant as far as getting a stage win is concerned. But if he starts racking up KOM points, then someone is going to be interested in not letting him get away.

Soler will not be competitive at any point. He won't heal or get better. His season is over. Although he should stay in as long as possible because this is the Tour.

I feel sorry for the guy. And respect that he's trying to suffer it out. Stage one. Geesh. Straight after the Giro experience. He should have been riding in a Barloworld cocoon the whole time.

You would think that Barloworld would be protecting him. However, they were probably riding for Hunter at the time. They should have given Hunter 3 or 4 guys and let the rest look after Soler. I didn't see it. Wasn't it near the front in the last few kilometers?

...that's why. He probably won't be competitive and odds are he won't be able to finish the Tour anyway.

If it was something where he had a shot of at least finishing the 3 weeks, then I'd encourage his staying in.

Malkmus doesn't know what he is talking about. Its a tiny little bone. He will be fine. I think losing all this time is just a signal that he is ready to go for the polka jersey. He needs to take himself out of GC contention to get away from the bunch and wrack up all those points.

Gotta go. Phil Liggett just emailed me.

Yesterday they only gave him 2 riders to pace him back. Maybe his form isn't great and they know that. I was kind of hoping to see him antimate in the mountains.

And today, he got zilch...nada. It's sad, but when you are unfortunate to bust a bone through a crash, there isn't much that you can do. Whatever happens to him this Tour, I hope he will be back in form (and be a bit more lucky) next year.

Well, I do not think anyone was considering him a true-blue GC contender. Big deal if he is a half an hour off the front in GC. His objective is (i) to win stages; (ii) to take home the polka dot jersey.

So if his team feels he can soldier on until the mountains and his medical condition is expected to improve, he will be expected to stay in the Tour and fight for stage wins. All the better now if he is 30 minutes back in GC. It just means that none of the GC contenders will chase him down.

Now, if he cannot handle the pain and/or is not expected to get better (is the scaphoid fracture confirmed?) then grazie e arrivederci. See you next year.

And for the record, he appears to be a quite a crappy bike handler... always is in the right place for the crash in the peloton. Every time.

I am hearing mixed reports on whether the scaphoid fracture is confirmed. Some doctor will tell me if I'm wrong. But it is not that hard to spot if you are looking for it. In this case, sounds as if they are looking for it.

LOL. True. Then again, think of Tugboat's owner. Another crash-magnet there...

He didn't have a safe-haven when he was racing.
