Given that the greenest measure, swapping car for bike, is last on the list,
I'm not inclined to give this much credence. But then, it is from the US.

My favourite was, "25. Inflate your Tires - if your tires are inflated at
all times your car will run more miles on less gas".

fine idea.

OK, a real green question: does it use less energy to drive 5 miles to
work in the car or to ride the bike there but then have a shower
lasting say 10 minutes (a bit long but not unrealistic).

One of my work colleagues has asked me several times why I have a bath
before I leave home, if I then have a shower when I get to work. Saying
I would be far better off just having a shower when I get there.

My company is running an environmental drive at the moment, including
recycling, encouraging people to cycle to work etc. One of the things
they suggested was sharing showers.


Number 2 on the list is not to rinse your dirty plates before putting
them in a dishwasher. Wouldn't hand washing be even better?

But if you're going to shower every day anyway, then showering when you get
to work is neutral, so the driving is just extra energy use.

I think that uses quite a bit more water than a dishwasher.

I'm happy to share a shower at home, but I think sharing showers at work
is taking things too far. In fact given the confined size of our work shower
cubicle I'm not convinced it's physically possible, at least not with two
of the larger cyclists (and I'm one of them).

Even an unshared shower uses a lot less water than a bath though.
Sometimes a long relaxing soak is what you want, but if it's just a question
of getting clean, the shower is better.

(also a useful technique if your work shower has a very slow drain and tends

I wonder how many workplaces have a shower? Mine doesn't now. The
management decided to convert it to a store cupboard :-(

That's what I'd call a "shower", no need for any additional description.
Why would you want to spend longer in the shower than it takes to get
clean (unless it's a cool shower on a hot day), or keep the water
running when it's not actually needed (unless ditto)?
