If you are a rider with ambition and ability - you want to win races, regardless of whether a riders metier is grand tours or stage races or classics.

Merckx, Hinault, Coppi etc : rode races and won throughout the season.

I thought Valverde was going to be that type of rider.

I don't think it's just doping. All professional sports are heading towards more specialization... as the $$pie increases...

The sad thing will be if everyone concedes races by cartelling/conspiring just one lone favourite in every race.
