No, big rivalries bring interest to the sport. 99ers getting cheap flights to France in July to watch Armstong then disappearing when Armstrong retired can fark right off IMO. Coppi v Bartali, Anquetil v Poulidor, Hinault v Fignon or Lemond, Roche v Delgado, Lemond v Fignon. These are the stories the fans want and what is talked about when the history of the sport is written

Cunego v Basso is one I'd like to see - but I think increasing specialisation will mean that we don't see great rivalries develop any more, just like the depth of real competition isn't there any more |

Yeah, along with the doping, specialisation has contributed to the demise of the sport. I've never bought the idea of specialisation anyhow. If you are a rider with ambition and ability - you want to win races, regardless of whether a riders metier is grand tours or stage races or classics. Merckx, Hinault, Coppi etc : rode races and won throughout the season. I thought Valverde was going to be that type of rider.

And there are no secrets" - this is a hard sporting event and hard work wins it - Armstrong 2005 TDF morelike hypocrisy. |
