He is quite simply the BEST stage race rider around.
No one else is even close. It's not because he dopes, it's not because he has the mastermind JB behind him or even because he has the best team. He's simply the best. You could tell he wasn't on form for this Giro...he just didn't have that unbelievable kick that he had during the Tour last year. Is this because he's clean? Or is it because he's out of shape? The broken elbow? Who knows, but he still won. He's a fucking phenom. When was the last time someone was this good, this young? |

Ullrich..Yes..
He won his first grand tour at 23, his second and last ..at 25 Pantani didn't win his first grand tour until he was 28. Although he did podium at the Giro and Tour in the same year at 24. I'd give the edge to Alberto over Pantani I think you have to go back to Lemond and Fignon to really find people this dominant at such a young age. And you can possibly throw Jan in there.. Pretty good company. |

Yes, Contador is definitely starting to earn respect. Winning two major tours can't be by coincidence.

I'd love to see him in this year's tour. The arbitrary nature of bans is really hurting the racing. I'm not a fan of Contador, but he should be given the chance to race.

Sure Contador is good but he has made very bad choices... and he is paying for that.
I am referring at his past and his last year : Paris Nice and TDF were clearly he was outside the norm.

Yes its good to see someone like this, if someone seems to be a step up physically it brings more interest to the sport, especially in the GT's as this is where the big audiences come from.
Its good to have another guy who could carry the torch on from the greats of the past, he is certainly capable of that. |

Giuseppe Saronni won a Giro at 21. Nearly all his big wins (2 x Giro, various classics, World Champion) were by the time he was 25.
Fignon had two Tours in the bag at 23. Hinault had a Tour and Vuelta and Liege-Bastongne-Liege and Gent-Wevelgem and Dauphine and French title at 23.

Not going to call Contadope a phenom yet, because -He descends like my Grandmother. Phenom should at least be able to ride the bike. -He is a doper -The pool of GT competitors has been drained by all the doping positives/OP/etc. It is not like he is competing against a deep field. |

Ava, I agree with you, but to be fair, Contador had brain surgery early in his career (he had some potentially fatal condition which I cannot be arsed to google right now). Don't know how much it impacted his career though. There is no doubt that he's a good bike rider. However, I would like him much, much more if he hadn't (i) been on the LS squad under Saiz and therefore implicated in OP (ii) stayed with shady characters such as JB afterwards. I would love to see a new Hinault. With Contador on the Astana team, I just cannot suspend disbelief. Anyway, his personality and his style of winning remind me more of BigMic than Hinault or Merckx if you absolutely have to compare him to one of the greats. |
