I had to find a newsgroup where Jobst doesn't contribute. By the way, I did talk to him once IRL, it was on a long ride from Palo Alto and I saw him in Pescadero (about 30 miles away) and asked him what those funny little levers were on his down tube. He responded by telling me that my Shimano road SPD's were stupid because you could only clip in on one side. I guess he's more famous than me because I remember and he probably doesn't. -ilan |

I didn't train hard enough before the event. Story of my life. That said, it would have taken some pretty intense training to catch the in-studio winner. I don't think I could have done it. He was GOOD. But when you go on a game show with 150+ contestants, your EV can't be that good even if you're really clever. But the meta-point is, perhaps, that the naturalized citizens who chose to play beat the Canadians-by-birth who chose to play. Also, you can't judge a book, by its, er, color. But I deleted your joke about that already. What I was going to say was that my friend E. Wong is something like a 3rd-generation Canook on his paternal line, while my father-in-law was fresh off the boat. Literally. He met my mother-in-law at a Catholic Seaman's Association dance. Indeed, your anecdote about meeting Jobst encompasses the basic nature of his rbt writing: you may not like what he says, you may not like how he says it, but you should listen to him, because he's usually right. Also, you totally deserved to be taunted after mocking his shifters. That's weak sauce. But it's a beautiful sports museum, everything you could hope for. They have two of the three "real" Stanley Cups there, and you can touch one of them: <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stanle...enticated.2C_an d_replica_versions> It's really done right: there's a platform with the cup standing on it, and an attendant in the room. You can go up, look at it, take your picture with it (or they'll take a photo for you using their pre-rigged pro-grade DSLR, which is a useful option; I think it was $10 for that photo), touch it, and really get to know the cup. You can't get that close to any of the many other trophies in the room. It's merely the most glorious trophy in sport, and it's housed in what has to be the best trophy room in sport*. The rest of the HHOF is also wonderful. They have a jersey collection that would put any fattie master to shame. This one case might be a tenth of the displayed pieces: http://www.flickr.com/photos/rcousi.../in/photostream Also, this is a photo of the Canadian "Test the Nation" cup: http://www.flickr.com/photos/rcousine/2208862442/ Not impressive. *At least until Zak-Paul starts hanging his cycling palmares in his two-story liquor cabinet -- Ryan Cousineau rcousine@gmail.com http://www.wiredcola.com/ "In other newsgroups, they killfile trolls."
