current was my intention. It's all about progress, not a fixed point in time ...

I was lactate tested in October. 220W...2.75 W/kg I've improved tremendously listening to my body and utilizing some of the good advice on this forum. I used to train by heart rate, but recently picked up a powertap (it has changed everything). Yesterday I did a 20 min LT test on a computrainer indoors and held 310 watts. So +90 watts in ~5 months. I've trained like a mad man (~15 hours a week). It's definitely a great feeling to see that pay off.

I don't know about that. I know a pro that can't do 5.22 W/kg for an hour....but he is a sprinter.

I should clarify-I'm sure it's possible to be a pro with an ftp of 5.22 w/kg. But it's based on something other than your climbing ability. I also suspect you have to be significantly larger than 64 kilos.

Hi

Just out of interest is everyone using the same method of determining their FTP? The reason I ask is because I can get very different results depending on the protocol I use.

Using the 95% of the average power for a 20 minute TT as per Allen & Coggan's book (ie after the 100rpm spin sets and the 5 min flat out TT) my FTP would measure lower than if I rested well and then just blasted out a 20 minute TT from fresh and took 95% of that.

Just curious, wondering if everyone does the "long" test - and my is it long or what!

The protocol in the book never made sense to me. For awhile I used Monod but found it was hard to get good data. Even then, the predicted CP always seemed on the high side. I also didn't like losing training time by doing short tapers before the tests.

I do 3x20 on an ergometer at a TSB of around -10 and use that as FTP. That allows me to avoid having to do any sort of taper and it counts as a workout, too.

Right... so you do 3x20 and use that as FTP? So are you calling your FTP the average power of the 3x20s? If so what sort of a recovery period do you have between the 20 minute efforts. Or are you taking 95% of the average of the 3, 95% of one of the efforts, or something else?

Just trying to get it clear in my mind what your method of establishing your FTP is

Cheers

It's nothing complicated. I simply use method #6:

http://www.cyclingforums.com/showpo...207&postcount=3

Rest period is 5 mins and if I wasn't doing them on an ergometer, I would take the average of the 3. But because I'm doing them on the erg, I set the power for all 3 intervals equally and I either complete the workout or I blow up at some point and literally grind to a halt.
