Wow, such combatative agreeing.

I agree (nicely) with everyone that it's metabolic fitness which determines whether you're going to finish in the upper, middle, or lower third of a given pack of competitors. After that, it's either a specialty like sprinting or AnCap, or a difference in tactical saavy, positioning, or luck which determines how you'll fare against the handful of folks with similar metabolic abilities to your own.

I also agree (with everyone) that if you want a pure measure of metabolic fitness then a 60-min evaluation works good, but if you want to measure for a specialty in additionto that, then you should use a multi-point model such as "power profiling" or Monod's Critical Power.

That's enough agreeing and restating for me now. Carry on.

I'm just lurking about, staying out of the spotlight, riding this wave completely aerobically, watching all'o'yous attack each other back and forth. When you're all spent and finally decide that you're not going anywhere, I'll use my natural anaerobic abilities to come around and win the argument.

not saying that number is inaccurate...well, maybe am, but what power meter was he using? if it was an srm and he didn't reset his zero offset w/ it being that cold....i dunno...that's a nice number regardless!

it's a damn nice number. i would be surpised if more than a handful of amateur riders can hit 5.1 w/kg over that distance.

I'll wager many a pro would struggle too.

Markster? Calibrated SRM Pro and I doubt very, very much if he forgot to ZO it :-) IOW, FTP was not based simply on a single result.

is the FTP close to Lactate treshold- (i did labtest therefore i know wattage for my LT)? As from what i understand reading this article the FTP testing method is more or less "under improvisation"? I am waiting for Polar power unit i bought to track my training " progres"- wanted to perform the FTP test as soon as i recive the power unit. Could someone place the link to tread for FTP "correcr" testing method.

You might want to search this forum - there's plenty of good data here.

...er, ways of determining your functional threshold power (roughly in
order of increasing certainty):

1) from inspection of a ride file.
2) from power distribution profile from multiple rides.
3) from blood lactate measurements (better or worse, depending on how it
is done).
4) based on normalized power from a hard ~1 h race.
5) using critical power testing and analysis.
6) from the power that you can routinely generate during long intervals
done in training.
7) from the average power during a ~1 h TT (the best predictor of
performance is performance itself).
Note the key words "hard", "routinely", and "average" in methods 4, 6,
and 7...
