Being such a scholar, Drongo - I would have thought that you'd know that "misrepresented" is a word, not a "phrase"...

Yes, something's rotten in the state of Denmark, of that there's no doubt. I can't fathom the reasoning behind making him a mod - "yes, let's get the most argumentative person on the forum (except for House) and make him a mod - genius! - better to have him in the tent pissing out, than out of the tent pissing in". Trouble is, he has the tent door open and is pissing everywhere.

It would be quite comical reading some of what he writes when he's trying to appear urbane and erudite, if it weren't for the fact that his internet persona is that of a chauvinist bigot.

Okay, that's funny.

Right you are. Colour me embarrassed. I originally used the word 'word', but replaced it with 'phrase' since the unmitigated horror that is, 'for perjurying me, I'm suspending you' really required more space for its putrescence to ooze than a mere word would allow. I should have re-read and ... re-phrased. My apologies.

<Thinks>: I just repeated what ChrisH said. Well, at least I haven't misrepresented his words now.

That is hilarious. A good point, memorably made. Well done.

How can you perjure him? That's rare skill Drongo, hold onto it. And where did the extra "y" appear from? Its owner wants to find it, presumably.

rare skill indeed - particularly since the definition of "perjury" requires that one be sworn to tell the truth... someone on DPF now thinks they're judge and jury as well as a mod?

I think "perjurying" is when you perjure in front of a jury... and "perjuring" is when there is only a judge. But that would be "perjudging" then if you followed through logically....

I'll have to continue my research into perjurying's etymology....

Perjury is the act of lying on oath before the Court. You can only perjure yourself, not someone else. I think ChrisH meant "defame". Trouble is, you need a reputation to harmed by defamation, and the truth is usually a complete defence.

Don't do it, Cranky. I have no objection to neologisms--Shakespeare invented hundreds of words, and whatever you think of his comedies he certainly had a gift for the language. However, there is such a thing as an ugly usage, no matter how novel, no matter how venerable. If 'perjurying' were a word, it should be taken out the back, tied blindfold to a pillar and shot until it became dead, dead, dead. Fortunately, it has never lived, and murder is thus unnecessary.

Judge, jury, prosecution, star (chamber) witness, and chief censor.

Only one more hat to match Edward de Bono.

It was an amateur attempt at satire Drongo...

In the olden days in Britain and the Commonwealth, when a judge was about to sentence a prisoner 'to be hanged by the neck until you are dead', he would wear a bit of black cloth over his wig. The poor bastard in the dock would see that bit of cloth and know exactly what was coming.

[Edit: there's a Blackadder episode where the joke relies on the audience knowing this. Series 4, where the general is trying Blackadder for shooting his pigeon. He puts on the black cap before the start of the trial.]
