Pick one? I am a fan of Shimano myself but SRAM is great equipment too. Go Campy if you can afford it. Actually I would be looking for some gently used or new Ultegra components. They perform as well as DA at a lower price. I beleive that they are a little heavier too, but they generally last longer. See what you can find on eBay and check out your local Craig's List. Also check with your local bike shops. They may have some older components that they want to get rid of and would be willing to give you a good deal on them. Don't be afraid to mix it up a little. You can save a little on the crankset if you go with FSA or Shimano 105. You really need to be concerned that the RD, the FD, and the brakes are all compatible with the brifters. Also you need to make sure that the cassette and chain will work with your RD and FD.

Yah, so far I have an ultegra 10spd cassette, a dura-ace rd and fd.
Campy is out, too pricey for me. I have heard that sram wont work with my rd, though I have seen it done. It looks to me like ultegra is going to be my best bet. I'll keep lookin! |

Tour of California!!!!
Who's been watching it? They have it streaming live online with a very cool interactive "Adobe" program. It's excellent! |

"On your #2.: 10 speed Dura Ace Rear Derailer works well with 9 speed shifter/cassette/chain combination. I know, I used it that way for over a year."
This was posted in this thread a few weeks ago. I have a question to build off of this..... I just purchased, for a great price, the left shifter for my front derailleur. It is a brand new ultegra 6600. I do not yet have the money to get the right brifter and I want to start spinning on my bike. A friend has a 105 right brifter but it is 9 spd. I currently have a 10spd cassette, Rear derailleur, and chain setup. Can I use the 9 spd brifter as a temporary setup? Is there any way I can make that work? |

I am pretty certain that you can use it. At any rate it won't hurt trying it. You will have to adjust your RD so that you either lose the smallest or largest cog on your cassette.

Yes, you can. I suggest adjusting the RD to the lower end, since you won't be using granny's cogs on the trainer. Enter Sandman is a great interval song, and a lot of stuff on the W.W.E. Wreckless Intent soundtrack. (Yeah, I know it's a wrestling video, I'm from Wisconsin, remember?) My son is 14 and he thinks WWE has all the best songs, so I scrape them from his pod to use.

Well, It won't be a problem anymore! I've just purchased a set of Ultegra 6600's and will be rolling in no time... as I have now purchased every part that I need. I also purchased a used trainer for $35 and will be assembling everything next weekend at the shop! I will post pictures as soon as I can!!! I am extremely excited.
Also, I purchased a pair of Adidas Pro Carbon shoes for $40 brand new... what a deal!!!! |

Good to hear. Brifters are a hot item. Can't wait to see your pictures. Good job on putting it all together. You high tech kids! And here I am, still on steel. When your legs wear out, you'll be riding steel, too. Until then, ride it like you stole it.

Didn't read all the posts but have you looked at Sheldon Brown's site? Lots of info and adjustment stuff from chain length to brake sizing.
