I've had my worst year racing so far. In preparation for today's race, I spent all day yesterday cleaaning out a spare bedroom that we are going to give to my son for his birthday. Kinda like the Brady Bunch attic. We haven't used this room in years and I found tons of long lost stuff including my saftey pins from my cat 5 year. That year was the best year of racing I've ever had. A few top tens and a podium. Haven't come close to riding that well in the last four years.

So, today I go to the race and I took my old safety pins and my Canada socks. My deal with the socks is that I wear them in every race until the good luck runs out of them and then they get banished. My Canada socks are my favorites but they ran out of luck last year. As you can see, wearing them today was a real brave and bold move on my part.

Cut to the chase, I finished in the back half of the bunch but felt great. Best I've felt in years. To think that I've been assuming that my athletic performance is in some way tied to something as silly as a pair of socks. It was really the saftey pins all along. I feel as if I turned a corner today.

I have a lucky pair of red underpants that I've used playing cricket the last 15 years. They cause chafing when I'm cycling... but it's worth it for racing. I got a top 20 podium once.

It was a big podium. The real race was for 20th place. No prizes for 21st.

I had a pair of shorts once that I just didn't wash much, and the chamos got a wicked, and I mean WICKED fungus that lit me up like Rudolph's nose. Unfortunately, they were my favorite shorts so I tried washing, then freezing, then leaving them in the sun....nothing. Then I discovered Lotrimin...I was dedicated to those shorts. Actually they were bibs...maybe that was why I loved them so much. I love bibs.

"21st is the first loser outside of the top 20" I always say

I wash mine once a month to prevent infections. It still doesn't help a lot of the time.

Yeah... he threw his bike at me in the parking lot. He wasn't happy that I got half a wheel in front of him in the last 5 yards.

I'm not sorry. If you're gunna be a winner... you can't be a nice guy.
