"Eletelephony
Once there was an elephant, Who tried to use the telephant-- No! no! I mean an elephone Who tried to use the telephone-- (Dear me! I am not certain quite That even now I've got it right.) Howe'er it was, he got his trunk Entangled in the telephunk; The more he tried to get it free, The louder buzzed the telephee-- (I fear I'd better drop the song Of elephop and telephong!)" ~ Laura E. "Wasteful Gesture Only Not
Ruth visits her mother's grave in the California hills. She knows her mother isn't there but the rectangle of grass marks off the place where the memories are kept, like a library book named Dorothy. Some of the chapters might be: Dorothy: Better Bird-Watcher Than Cook; Dorothy, Wife and Atheist; Passionate Recycler Dorothy, Here Lies But Not. In the summer hills, where the tall tough grass reminds you of persistence and the endless wind reminds you of indifference, Ruth brings batches of white roses, extravagant gesture not entirely wasteful because as soon as she is gone she knows the deer come out of the woods to eat them. What was made for the eye goes into the mouth, thinks Ruth to herself as she drives away, and in bed when she tries to remember her mother, she drifts instead to the roses, and when she thinks about the roses she sees instead the deer chewing them- pale petals of the roses in the dark warm bellies of the sleeping deer- that's what going to sleep is like." ~ Tony Hoagland CLICK ~ ! ~ * The Animal Rescue Site ~ Click the purple button To feed an animal in need, every click gives a bowl ... http://www.theanimalrescuesite.com ~ * ~ |

DOG-GEREL
I sat beside a lady fair, A lady grave and sweet; Withal so wise, that well I might Have sat me at her feet. She stooped to pat the puppy dog That gambolled at her knee; And when she spoke, 't was in a tongue Was wholly strange to me. "A wizzy wizzy woggums, then! A ditty dotty doggums, then! And diddy wanty dumpy up? A pitty witty pessums pup!" I spoke to her of foreign climes, Of politics and popes; Of Bishop Bylow's pious rhymes, And General Jingo's hopes. She answered well and wittily, Then turned her eyes aside, And tenderly she whispered to The creature by her side. "A pupsy wupsy keeter, then! Was never nossing sweether, then! A teenty tawnty tiny tot, A lovely dovely darling dot!" I rose at length and strolled away, Not wishing to intrude; Yet thought perhaps she'd bid me stay, And rather hoped she would. But no! she never raised her head. I turned the corner near, And as I went, her silver tones Still floated to my ear. "A toodle toodle toodle, then! A wisky wasky woodle, then! A 'toopid manny gone, my joy, My diddy doddy dorglums boy!" ~ Laura E. "The Tale of Mr. Tootleoo.
Now ~ ! listen while I tell to you The tale of Mr. Tootleoo, A sailor jovial and brave Who sailed upon the ocean wave. One day when, in the Southern seas He danced a hornpipe at his ease, He felt a most unpleasant shock ~ The Ship had run upon a rock. Now Tooteloo could never tell Exactly how it all befell. He'd scratch his head and try to think When people asked him 'Did you sink ~ ?' Or 'Pray what happened to the crew ~ ?' But this in fact was all he knew, On coming to himself he found That after all he was not drowned." ~ Bernard Darwin, Grandson of Charles Darwin CLICK ~ ! ~ * The Animal Rescue Site ~ Click the purple button To feed an animal in need, every click gives a bowl ... http://www.theanimalrescuesite.com ~ * ~ |

"Love Arm'd
Love in Fantastique Triumph satt, Whilst bleeding Hearts around him flow'd, For whom Fresh pains he did create, And strange Tryanic power he show'd; >From thy Bright Eyes he took his fire, Which round about, in sport he hurl'd; But 'twas from mine he took desire, Enough to undo the Amorous World. >From me he took his sighs and tears, >From thee his Pride and Crueltie; >From me his Languishments and Feares, And every Killing Dart from thee; Thus thou and I, the God have arm'd, And sett him up a Deity; But my poor Heart alone is harm'd, Whilst thine the Victor is, and free." ~ Arphra Behn CLICK ~ ! ~ * The Animal Rescue Site ~ Click the purple button To feed an animal in need, every click gives a bowl ... http://www.theanimalrescuesite.com ~ * ~ |
