Looks like lots of cyclists have had their own "incidents". I think some of the locals here like to test people. They are aware of your presence, but just want to make life difficult. Perhaps they do it because I'm female.

I agree tho. Pedestrians listening to music would be in another world, and I don't think my little bell would even register above what they are listening to.

One other thing... Have you noticed how pedestrians waiting for the walk signal seem to form a huge gang on each side of the road, and when they meet in the middle there's a massive amount of side stepping and dodging? I've always wondered why they haven't worked it out. Keep left and nobody is held up - seems like common sense to me.

Common sense isn't quite common these days.

Once saw a guy riding down a shared pathway going towards a group of people walking 3 abreast. The guy on the outside of the group of three, even though he was looking straight at the rider who was ringing his bell, pretended not to see him. The rider had to go very close to the walker to get by him. The walker then made this great dramatic swaying motion, arms in the air, as if the rider had come out of no where and almost hit him.

There are boofheads everywhere!!!!

Interesting thread. I really feel pumped up after reading this to go out and get me an airhorn.

'tink' 'tink' just doesn't quite cut it. Not enough ooomph.

Usually when I approach a group of seemingly oblivious pedestrians, I tend to slow down to about 25, for fear of crashing into some ass who decides to jump in front of me.

Of course with an air horn, I could blow a warning from 20m away, catch their attention, and cruise pass them without shaving off any speed.

See a potential fool, sound the horn, proceed.

See a hot chick, beep the horn, screech to a halt & proceed.

i was on the cycleway we have in southern tasmania, its a two lane pathway with a clear centre line. And most of the way is is a grass verge on the left side. i was dumb founded when i had to veer onto the verge as 3 cyclist decided to stop and have a chat in the middle of the pathway taking up the whole track! I cant understand why they wouldnt have moved onto the verge so they could have their convo!

if i was on my mountain bike instead of my new roadie i would have delibratly plowed into them!

Riding on bike paths/cycleways is analogous to driving in peak hour traffic - you adjust your speed to suit the conditions and remain alert at all times.

Doggatas, you need to spend some time in a rural area - try hooning round a corner at warp factor 5 only to find a couple of your neighbours have stopped their cars in the middle of the road for a bit of a natter.

Thank goodness for ABS, is all I can say.

Not at all. I'm in total agreeance. If you want to ride on shared paths, you got to learn to share them. Being a wanker with an air horn to scare of people going for their nightly walk around the park is NO different from wankers in cars who lay in to the horn when they get slowed down 5 seconds to the next red light by someone on a bike.

There is a difference between a wanker of motorist on his horn at a cyclist and a pedestrian on a shared path. A cyclist will stay to the left on the road or shared path compared with many pedestrian that wonder like browns cows.
