As far as bicycle hording it could be a perfect choice.
Problem is I'm tired of the car and would like a change.

I can't seem to find anything that has so much cheap space...

I probably don't need all the bike carrying ability either as my son rarely rides and my wife is riding less and less and when we go on long race trips I rarely take many team mates.

Therefore thinking of getting a smaller car...that can squeeze two bikes in the back with front wheels off and a few on the roof...a bit more engine power as well

On the list.

Mazda MPV
Toyota Kluger.
Toyota Harrier.
Lexus (expensive Harrier)(If I win the lottery).
Toyota Estima.

(Not sure if the names are the same outside Japan).
Take a look at the Ford Focus wagon. I own one. It's a bit under powered and the brakes aren't so great, but once you get her up to speed, it cruises easily at 90 mph. Two bike w/front wheels in the back with the seats down isn't a prob. Also, it comes equipped with a rack that you can attach a Tule or Yakima on without hooking under the door wells.

Great cars. 34 mpg on the highway. Low maintenance. I have a 2001. Got it new. Put 100k on it, never been in the shop except early when the steering column was recalled. Oh, and, the brake pads out lasted the rotors. Brakes are terrible. For 34 mpg, it's got decent power. I'd go for the manual. They handle very well. Interior switches are sturdy. Interior is well laid out.
