Matagi. I'll be wearing a malliot jaune from the sounds of things , and I'll be checking the BOM site for windstrength and direction before I go.

Next few weeks going to do more hills and one week we'll try the hills in the National Park.

Thing is its hard to do long road rides around Sydney because of the damn buses and idiot motorists, somwhere like Centennial at least gives you some protection.
If you are living around Kingsford, do you wanna practice together, coz you mention something about Centennial Park, I used to ride there a lot.

btw, I setup a Team over the GongRide site called, Team Newbie, if you want, just join our team! we are doing some fund raising as well! Everyone are more than welcome to join my team! if you don't wanna play solo on the big day. so far I have 3 members in my team ... just raised around $701 up till today.

Leave home at 6.30am on Sunday and ride up to Waterfall, following the gong route. There will be tons of riders on the road at that time, you are bound to find someone riding a similar pace to ride with.

Have a look at the profile map that has been posted on this thread;

Matagi, did hubby get that custom built frame?

No, he is still in the planning stages, although it is definitely going to be steel and he would like some really fancy lugwork (obviously it is going to be lugged as well).

At the moment, he is having fun tinkering with the Miyata and I have also successfully distracted him by getting him to build me up a bike from a very nice steel frame we picked up on ebay for $30.

It was right under my nose.

The acutal road feels different. Hills to note are;
- Sutherland - Acacia Rd to Railway Crossing - Loftus, but it doesn't look like that on the map.
- Shire boundry to bald hill
- I haven't ridden clifton hill, so I don't know.
None of the others are significant. The profile map is very decpective.

I wouldn't take to much notice of this.

I doubt that the cycleways along the Wollongong beaches are higher than the Kingsway.

Did you notice the map?

Thumbs up Re: MSGong Ride

So, feeling a lot more confident now.

Did the M7 bikepath Saturday 78.3 k in 2 hours 40 mins with a 10 min banana stop in the middle.

Prayin' it aint windy though, don't want no 40k headwinds.

You are a sub 3 hour rider, you will be ahead of most of the riders. From what I saw last year while riding home, there were tons of riders around the 5 hour mark.

BTW, I've never encounted strong headwinds riding up to waterfall, only mild ones, so the likely hood off 40k headwinds is very unlikely.

Actually I think my calcs were wrong, I'm still getting used to the new polar computer on my Trek 7.7FX so my Sat ride was more like 3hr 25m not 2h 40min. It was a great ride and the seat was pretty good for a 3 hour plus ride on a new seat. I am feeling more confident about this MSGong ride now. But the proof of the pudding will be on the day partic. with the heat and all the other riders.

Hey, just the bike I almost bought until I decided on my present one.

I am also sizing myself up for the Gong ride with that ever so friendly DHBC group and took on the ride to Waterfall yesterday. I think I am close, may just be able to do it with some dignity if I can get a bit more training b/n now and then.

Well done. Most riders will be slower than you on the Gong ride.

Man someone else slagged (not Mike) me for saying there was only one hill of any significance riding out of the RNP.

The climb out of the bottom of the Waterfall descent to the boundary of the RNP is less than 2km and less than 3%. If you are a recreational cyclist (as in cycles a couple of times a year) it'll sting you a little and you'll probably be in the granny gear, or maybe resort to walking, if you do any training at all it'll be mildly uncomfortable (at worst). If you ride lots and enjoy climbing it's beautiful scenery and really pleasant and you'd like it to extend for another 10km and you can easily do it in the big ring.

It's way easier riding than the climb out from Audley Weir to Heathcote, which has been on the agenda the last few years, which while shorter is far steeper.

There actually used to be a good website that described a few of the hills around Sydney and had riders times for the climbs. Cant remember the URL though.
