The easiest way for most Americans to save money on their petrol/diesel bill (or gas as you like to call it) would be to trade their petrol guzzling SUV vehicles which have a economy of less that 10 miles per gallon in urban areas for cars like the Toyota Yaris which pops out 40 miles per gallon. Yes 40. I.e you use one quarter of the petrol, pay one quarter of the price (the car is cheaper anyway) and release one quarter of the toxic fumes that the SUV produces.
But I don't suppose that idea will float to well with most Americans. Better still, use public transport or ride your bike. |

ok here it is
the big oil companies are into alot more than fuel. in my area there is only 2 refineries they supply every one. your plan on the surface sounds good but here is how it works. your neighbor let us call him bob lives next door to you. he operates a gas station. every month he earns an income based on his gas sales and his candy, pop, cigs etc. which he pays a percentage of his gross to the oil company. he sells gasoline that is not his and that he does not buy. the oil company moniters the bank account that he has to deposit money to daily. because it is not his money and they want thiers. now bob has no say in the price of gas. the oil co sets the price and bob does what he is told cause if he does not he will spend the rest of his life in court. and the oil co will find some other poor schmuck to replace him. so now every one is going to make the big oil company pay attention so we are going to boycott thier product. which is also sold across the street at harrys under the pay less logo. meanwhile bob across the street is still paying his rent to the oil co. his accountant wants to get paid, workmans comp is pretty expensive and hydro and water bills come in. etc etc. do not take long poor bob your neighbor and friend is going broke. he is drinking a lot. his wife takes off and he ends up in miracle valley. the oil co replaces him tells the new guy bob was a poor operator, ie drank too much and his wife was a floozy. but you yes you the new guy are much smarter. and are sure to make at least a living. meanwhile harry across the street is making a little more money. he is too busy to figure out why. the oil co has lost nothing. and so it goes. if you want to make a difference make one for yourself. drive a more efficient vehicle. drive less. colectivley we can not make a dent in mobil or esso or shell or chevron. they are too big and into stuff in ways that we can not touch |

We should be thankful for the rising costs because cost is the only motivator that will get us off the bottle as a society. Also, we should note that America is not the only nation in the world ridiculously hooked on oil and a slave to oil concerns when it comes to foreign policy. This is a worldwide problem. China and Russia are not moderate in their stance against Iran because they really think it would be a good idea for Iran to get nuclear weapons. No, they are moderate because they are dependant on Iran's oil supply. We are all in the same boat. The affect of smaller nations' foreign policy is not as evident simply because they don't need the same volume of oil. They still need it mind you, but small volumes can be found much easier. So you can't compare, say, Ireland with China. And like I've said before, there are many "sensible" Europeans consuming much more petro driving their "sensible" sedans at a gazillion miles an hour than my beighbor driving a Ford Explorer at 65mph. I, for one, am happy to see rising prices - despite my skinnier wallet. |

Agreed : but SUV and 4X4's aren't confined to the USA. In this country we have people driving those cars. They sit in their vehicles - mostly in gridlocked traffic going nowhere. America definitely is an offender but so too is my country. We all need to get away from dependency on oil/petrol where possible. I use public transport whenever possible - or better still I walk/cycle whenever I can.

Screw 'em. I drive my car the absolute minimum neccesary, and cycle every where I can. If I don't start my car all week, I'm happy.

Crude oil price has just passed the $74.00 per barrel. mark.
Three years ago (prior to the USA invasion of Iraq) it was at $31.00 per barrel.

If the price of everything you buy rises at the same rate as oil stocks you are no better off. If the price of everything you buy rises at a higher rate than the price of oil then you are worse off. You're deluding yourself.

Everything has to rise higher than the oil price increase - in order for companies to maintain margin to account for the price rise. This means that the consumer ultimately bears the cost. As you said any gains are wiped away through rising prices.

Shares in a chinese bicycle manufacturer would be a much better investment.
